Not all car storage is the same. A self-storage unit, a shared warehouse and a dedicated collector car facility may all advertise “car storage,” but what happens to your car while you’re away is very different. Here’s a practical checklist to bring on any tour.
1. Is it truly climate controlled?
Ask whether both temperature and humidity are managed, not just whether the building has air conditioning. In Florida especially, humidity control is what protects interiors, electrics and metal.
2. Security you can see
- 24-hour video surveillance
- Limited keys and controlled access
- No walk-in public traffic
- Discretion: your car shouldn’t be photographed or posted without your permission
3. Fire protection and construction
Ask about sprinklers, fire-rated walls and how the building is constructed. These questions rarely come up until they matter.
4. Who handles the car?
Experience matters. The person moving your car should know how to start, drive, lift and load everything from a pre-war classic to a modern supercar without damage.
5. Care while it sits
Will the car be on a battery tender? Is its condition documented at check-in and check-out? Can the facility exercise the car, detail it, or coordinate service and transport? A good facility keeps the car ready, not just parked.
6. Access when you want it
Find out the hours and how much notice is needed to get your car out. The best setups make this easy: you request a time, and the car is waiting when you arrive.
7. Insurance
Understand what the facility carries and what you need to carry. Typically, the facility has liability and garage coverage, and the owner keeps comprehensive and collision on each vehicle.
8. Clear pricing
Look for published rates, and ask about long-term and multi-car discounts.
