Two of the most requested services in detailing are also the most confused. People ask for a “ceramic” when they want their swirls gone, or ask for “correction” when they really want protection. They do different jobs, and in most cases the best result uses both, in the right order.
Paint correction fixes the finish
Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a microscopically thin layer of clear coat to level out defects: swirl marks, light scratches, water spots, oxidation and holograms from previous poor polishing. When the surface is level, light reflects evenly, and that’s what gives paint real depth and clarity.
- Paint enhancement is a lighter, conservative polish that restores gloss and reduces light swirls. It’s a great choice for well-kept cars and for original finishes where you want to remove as little paint as possible.
- Multi-stage correction uses more aggressive steps followed by refining steps, for heavier swirls, sanding marks and scratches.
Correction isn’t one-size-fits-all. Older single-stage paints, soft modern clear coats and original factory finishes on collector cars all behave differently, which is why a paint inspection under proper lighting comes first.
Ceramic coating protects it
A ceramic coating is a liquid protection layer that bonds to the paint and cures into a hard, glossy, water-repellent shell. It doesn’t remove defects. Whatever is in the paint when the coating goes on gets sealed underneath it. In exchange, it makes the finish far easier to clean, helps resist UV, bird droppings and water spotting, and keeps the gloss looking fresh for years with proper care.
Why the order matters
Because a coating locks in what’s underneath, the right sequence is: wash and decontaminate, correct or enhance the paint, then coat. Coating uncorrected paint means preserving the swirls you wanted gone.
Which does your car need?
- Swirls, haze or scratches? Start with paint enhancement or correction.
- Paint already looks great? A ceramic coating keeps it that way.
- New car, or a car you want to keep perfect? Light enhancement followed by a coating is the ideal combination.
- Not sure? Send photos. We’ll recommend the right service and only what the car actually needs.
